An optional secret weapon called Crawl Control proved exceptional at maximizing available traction, though. It lets drivers select one of five very low speeds from a ceiling mounted dial, and engage that speed with the touch of a button. Control of the brakes and throttle are then handed to the computer, leaving drivers to focus more on concentrating, looking and steering.

Over virtually anything, Crawl Control kept the 4Runner inching along more cautiously than a teenager sneaking back into the house at 3 am. It works on inclines and declines, and even makes quick work of those uncomfortably steep climbs that lay occupants on their backs.
Other than the sound effects of the ABS pump and brakes that work the Crawl Control system, there's virtually no fuss. It almost makes things too easy.
Think of it like off-road cruise control. If you're traveling on a long trail for extended periods of time, it can take a lot of physical and mental fatigue out of the equation. This feature changed your skeptical writer's position on driver assist electronics for the better. Whether or not you're a fan of 'do it yourself' off-roading, be sure to give it a try during a test drive, when the new 4Runner goes on sale.
Crawl Control is far from the 4Runner's only trick, and a Multi-Mode terrain selector is operated by an identical dial beside the Crawl Control interface. It allows the driver to pre-select the type of terrain between truck and target. Throttle and traction control operation are adjusted to help customize power delivery for the trail in question.
An available de-coupling sway-bar increases front suspension articulation for tackling steep obstacles, and a new 'X-REAS' suspension uses some trick hydraulics to enhance handling performance and comfort.
At writing, 4Runner's sole engine offering was a revised 4-litre V6 with 270 horsepower. That's 34 more than the outgoing V6, and 10 more than even the old 4.7 litre V8. It's better on fuel, too-- thanks in part to the standard five-speed automatic transmission. When 4Runner hits dealers, several option packages and accessories will be available to help tailor it to any lifestyle.
In all, 4Runner now puts a bigger-than-ever arsenal of off-road tools at its owners disposal. How many of these tools are used, and how clean they remain, is up to that owner.
The 2010 4Runner is priced from under $37,000, and goes on sale in the near future.
